Dawn Chorus 2023

Sunday, 7 May 2023, 12.05am

Witness the beauty of nature with Ireland's Dawn Chorus 2023, scheduled for Sunday, 7th May from midnight to 07:00 on RTÉ Radio 1. This live broadcast combines early-morning birdsong and expert commentary, emphasising Ireland's unique natural heritage.

The Dawn Chorus, hosted by Derek Mooney and a team of experts, has become a broadcasting event in Ireland and beyond. The programme has received awards, including the National PPI Radio Award for Innovation and the International Rose d’Or award.

On Sunday, 7th May, Mooney Goes Wild will feature Irish birdsong from midnight to 07:00 on RTÉ Radio One, in a simulcast with RTÉ Lyric FM. The main presentation team, composed of Derek Mooney, Niall Hatch, Éanna Ní Lamhna, and local ornithologist Alan Farrell, will introduce the dawn chorus and discuss the behaviour of various bird species as the sun rises.

Listeners will also have the opportunity to hear birdsong from different parts of Ireland, provided by Dr Richard Collins, Eric Dempsey, and Terry Flanagan. This year's Dawn Chorus encourages both birds and listeners to participate, as audiences are invited to submit their own recordings and live feeds of birdsong performances happening nearby.
