The Director of Performance (Drama) is central to the artistic planning of the Drama department at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. As artistic director of the Richard Burton Company [RBC] they are responsible for the selection of all drama texts, new commissions and the appointment of directors for RBC drama production. They work with the Head of Musical Theatre, the Head of Stage Management and the Head of Design to create an innovative and challenging public performance programme.

The College is seeking an energetic, experienced individual with an established network of industry contacts who will enjoy working in an institution dedicated to professional training for the theatre, musical theatre, film and television professions within a highly developed, student-focused ethos. The expansion of the film and television industry in Wales over the last fifteen years has provided, and will continue to provide the Acting department with opportunities to advance training in screen acting.

The successful candidate will be of the highest calibre and professional integrity, and will make a major contribution to the future of the College and the Drama department’s standing both nationally and internationally. They will be expected to engage artistically and educationally with students, undertaking a sustainable amount of teaching, project and directing work, alongside assuming a range of leadership/management responsibilities.

The successful candidate will have an established artistic profile in the performing arts. Teaching experience will also be extremely valuable but is not essential. They will be comfortable in leading strategic change and will have the vision to maintain and further develop the Acting department’s industry status, and internationally recognized profile. The successful candidate will possess – or will need to develop rapidly – an understanding of the educational, cultural, geographic and economic life of Wales and the UK, and will be an advocate for widening access to and promoting the arts as an essential element in civilised societies.
