Organ Scholarship - 2023/24

Tuesday, 20 June 2023, 5.00pm

St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Dublin intends to appoint a part-time organ scholar from 1 October 2023 to 31 August 2024. The scholarship may be renewed for a further year.

St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Dublin and a busy city-centre church. It is a major centre of cultural and religious life in Dublin and has been the focus of several historic occasions of church and state over its 200-year history.

The Pro-Cathedral has a strong musical tradition and is home to the Palestrina Choir of boys and men, founded in 1903, and the St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Girls Choir, founded in 2009. Both choirs sing weekly liturgies as well as undertaking an extensive programme of concerts and tours.

The position of organ scholar offers a period of intense professional training and skill development for young organists intending to pursue a career in church music. The present annual remuneration is in the region of €7,000. Additional fees are payable for extra services, extra rehearsals, concerts etc. Accomodation is not provided. The appointee may be given free organ lessons by the cathedral organist, subject to satisfactory progress by the organ scholar. The organ scholar’s weekly schedule, to be agreed at the start of the year, is designed with enough flexibility to accommodate university studies.
