The Sixteen, one of the world’s finest and most renowned choral ensembles, returns to the National Concert Hall with its pioneering founder/conductor, Harry Christophers with a special programme Song In The Wilderness marking the 400th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, William Byrd.
Hallmarked by its tonal richness, expressive intensity and compelling collective artistry, The Sixteen has been acclaimed worldwide for performances drawn from well over five centuries of sacred and secular repertoire delivered with precision, power and passion. Their innovative and imaginative work, which speaks to so many, has made a profound impact on the performance of choral music and attracted a large new audience.
Widely admired in his own time both at home and abroad, William Byrd’s influence on future generations was immense. This special programme, marking the composer’s landmark anniversary, explores the music of his influences, colleagues and pervading faith and takes Byrd’s legacy firmly into the modern day with new works by the Bulgarian composer, Dobrinka Tabakova to two psalms Byrd set in the final years of his long and complex life.
