Hailing from Belfast, the now Liverpool based, Irish songwriter Lucy Gaffney has just released her new single ‘Send Me Away’, out today 9th October via Frictionless Music.

An imperious dream-pop tune, ‘Send Me Away’ embraces contrast. Lucy’s voice rests transcendentally on a motorik rhythm, whilst luscious background synths combine with at times spiky guitars. The persistent tension and release paints a deep picture; everything is set up for Lucy to deliver the infectious hooks for which she’s quickly becoming known.

Thematically it tends on this airy edge implemented by her vocals, as she explains:

“For me the track really encapsulates the dreamy element in the idea of love, getting lost in intoxicating moments and the electric excitement of the unknown.”

And the rough edges in the sound are intentional, adding an earthy juxtaposition…

“With the recording I wanted to capture the garage band rawness from when I wrote it in the rehearsal studio. There’s an honest naivety to it that fizzes with electric quirks and kinks from start to finish, igniting an in the moment carefree edge.”

Influences aren’t worn on her sleeve, but lovingly interwoven into her process. From granite-willed female artists in Jenny Lewis, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde and Sinead O’Connor, to Radiohead, The Cure and The War on Drugs, a nod to meticulous song-craft is ever-present.

Her short solo career – with just the one single out so far - has already seen acclaim from the iconic Liam Gallagher (who called her music ‘celestial’), a collaboration with DMA’s and tours with Bill Ryder Jones and She Drew The Gun. Big supporters at Radio have come in the form of BBC Radio 1, as well as BBC Introducing Merseyside and BBC Introducing Ulster.

Previously, Lucy was part of Marathon signed band Southern, alongside her brother and consistent collaborator Thom – and her releases and profile carry this feeling of experience and self-confidence.

The track was produced by The Coral’s James Skelly, positioning her as a rising artist in the fertile Northern English indie scene. Featuring on the track alongside Lucy is Thom Southern (Electric Guitar, Bass) and Jim Sharrock(Drums).

‘Send Me Away’ the new single from Lucy Gaffney is out now via Frictionless Music.
