Eblana String Trio

Andrew Norman The companion guide to Rome
W. A. Mozart Divertimento for String Trio, K563

Inspired by some of the most beloved cities, the Panorama Series brings audiences on a musical tour exploring place and the music it inspired.

The Eblana String Trio has been described as playing with “stunning poise that takes, at times, my breath away” (SlippedDisc). The trio champion repertoire, often neglected, for the string trio formation.

Rome and Vienna take centre stage here. US composer Andrew Norman’s The companion guide to Rome was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2012. “Like many of the buildings in Rome, this piece is the product of a long gestation marked by numerous renovations, accretions, and ground-up reconstructions. What has emerged is a collection of portraits—nine in all—of my favourite Roman churches. The more I worked on these miniatures, the less they had to do with actual buildings and the more they became character studies of imaginary people, my companions for a year of living in the Eternal City.” (A. Norman).

Vienna is the inspiration in Mozart’s towering Divertimento K563. The work was premiered in Dresden during Mozart’s “Berlin journey” (when he toured multiple German cities). “Every note is significant, every note is a contribution to spiritual and sensuous fulfilment in sound…one of his noblest works” (Alfred Einstein)
