Vanbrugh, Michael McHale and Malachy Robinson: The Trout Quinet / Brahms Piano Quintet

Vanbrugh, Michael McHale and Malachy Robinson: The Trout Quinet / Brahms Piano Quintet

Friday, 31 January 2020, 8.00pm

The Vanbrugh with guests, pianist Michael McHale and double-bassist Malachy Robinson, will tour nationwide in January performing Brahms C minor piano quartet and Schubert’s “Trout” quintet. From Saturday 25 to Friday 31st, they will visit Limerick, Sligo, Fermanagh, DúnLaoghaire, Listowel, Cork and Navan.

The Vanbrugh (violinist Keith Pascoe, violist Simon Aspell and cellist Christoper Marwood) welcome regular guests pianist Michael McHale and double-bassist Malachy Robinson for performances of two of the finest works in the chamber music repertoire. Brahms’ turbulent and dramatic C minor piano quartet tells the tale of Brahms’ love for Clara Schumann in one of the most powerful expressions of musical romanticism. The second part of the concert brings complete contrast with Schubert’s Trout Quintet, a perennial favourite amongst both musicians and audiences for its elegance, charm and beauty.

The Vanbrugh has emerged as a legacy of the Vanbrugh Quartet, resident quartet to RTE from 1986 to 2013 and Artists in Residence at University College, Cork from 1990 until the retirement of violinist Gregory Ellis in 2017. The Quartet gave nearly 2000 concerts around Ireland and enjoyed a successful international career. The Vanbrugh is building an equally strong reputation for its performances of the piano quartet and other chamber music repertoire.

Belfast-born Michael McHale has established himself as one of Ireland’s leading pianists and has developed a busy international career as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. Malachy Robinson is Ireland’s most sought after and versatile double bassist, performing with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Crash Ensemble and many other ensembles.

The seven-venue tour is funded by the Arts Council and the National String Quartet Foundation and supported by RTÉ Supporting the Arts.
