Background
The RIAM, as a national conservatoire for music in Ireland, is embarking on one of the most transformational phases in its 170-year history. We are in the midst of the major re- development of our premises on Westland Row, a fully funded project which is set to complete in 2022. We are poised to create Ireland’s leading centre for music education, training, and performance. We aim to nurture excellence, build audiences, advocate for increased access to music participation, and amplify the impact of our work by forging powerful links between young people, emerging, and established professional artists, diverse audiences, and society at large.
RIAM’s strategy aims to bring scholarship and practice closer together across all RIAM levels, to train performers who can draw on research to develop their unique artistic voice. We are currently welcoming applications for the position of Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in Beginner Group Violin. - Significant experience teaching at beginner and Junior levels
- Experience teaching both groups and one-to-one
- Significant experience in Early Years educational theory e.g. Kodaly, Suzuki, Colourstrings and/or others.
- Professional performance experience
- Excellent organisation, co-ordination, communication and leadership skills
- Experience in mentoring or co-teaching
Closing dates and interview information
This position is part-time and based on c. 70 hours spread over a 30-week academic year. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 18th June 2021. Shortlisted applicants will be called to interview in the following weeks.
At the interview, the candidate will be required to:
1. Teach or coach a demonstration lesson with a group of Junior students
2. Free choice Presentation Task
Give a 10-minute presentation on one of the following topics:
- Creative approaches to teaching and learning, for example, inclusive curricula, co-teaching and delivery
- Early Years pedagogical development and theory
DUTIES
TEACHING
Teaching will predominantly be at group beginner level and the chosen candidate will lead and co-teach beginner group classes alongside RIAM’s Violin Teaching Assistants. The chosen candidate will also work alongside the Head of Junior RIAM and Violin School, our education partner for group violin, undertaking training and providing regular feedback in a Kaizen-style approach to the development of curriculum and resources.
- Group teaching of beginner violin students
- Planning lessons, co-teaching with Teaching Assistants
- Mentoring Teaching Assistants
- Continuous curriculum review and feedback
- Co-ordinating and communicating with Head of Junior RIAM, Teaching Assistants and parents/guarantors of students
ANCILLARY DUTIES
Work with the Head of Junior RIAM on curriculum development and growth and progression of the group violin programme.
Availability for Saturday and/or Sunday teaching is required for these hours.See further details at the link below.
