The Juilliard School invites applications for a full-time member of faculty in Keyboard Skills to start in August 2020, with possible expansion into other classroom courses for solo piano majors.

The Keyboard Skills curriculum includes required courses in core skill areas (keyboard harmony, score reading, transposition, and basic improvisation) as well as electives in specialized areas (improvisation, techniques in contemporary piano music, and techniques of vocal collaboration). Juilliard seeks candidates who have first-hand knowledge of the most in-demand piano skills in the professional music world today; a keen appreciation of the needs of current Juilliard piano majors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; and the ability to inspire students to reach their fullest potential technically and artistically.

The qualified candidate will have a strong background in piano performance; substantial experience teaching at the college level; top-level facility in keyboard skills, including keyboard harmony, score reading, transposition, and basic improvisation; and extensive performance experience in one or more of the following areas: solo piano, chamber music, new music, improvisation, fortepiano, or vocal collaboration. The ideal candidate would also have specialized knowledge of, and demonstrated ability to teach in, one of the following areas: improvisation, vocal collaboration, techniques of contemporary piano music, fortepiano, or harpsichord.

The instructor will work under the guidance of the Director of Keyboard Studies and Piano Curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications
– DMA, PhD, or commensurate experience
– A record of excellence in teaching at the college level
– A demonstrable command of basic keyboard skills, including sight-reading, score-reading, keyboard harmony, transposition, and basic improvisation
– Strong interpersonal skills
– A working knowledge of technology, as applicable in the classroom

Preferred Additional Qualifications
– An extensive career in piano performance
– Specialized experience teaching in one or more of the following areas: improvisation, vocal collaboration, techniques of contemporary piano music, fortepiano, or harpsichord
– Experience teaching piano or piano pedagogy
– Experience teaching in an academic classroom setting
