First Friday: Mary MacNamara and Sorcha Costello
Mary MacNamara and Sorcha Costello are a mother and daughter duet on concertina and fiddle from Tulla, Co. Clare. Their music is deeply rooted in the East Clare regional style of Irish traditional music, with their trademark steady rhythm and swing. Mary’s concertina playing is highly respected both nationally and internationally, and she is one of the most sought-after teachers of Irish music today. Mary has recorded 3 solo albums and 2 duet albums, the most recent being “The Lady’s Cup of Tea” which is a duet album with Sorcha.
Sorcha has just released her own solo fiddle album “The Primrose Lass”, which follows her recent success after being named as TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2021. The last few years have seen Sorcha become one of Irelands most in demand fiddle players and teachers, playing at festivals world-wide including New Zealand, Australia and the USA, all in 2023. Together Mary and Sorcha have a deep musical understanding, which produces a magical, rhythmical flow in their music.
