As our roster of authors and titles expand, Merky Books is looking for a well organised team player, with an incredible eye for detail and time management skills, to join us as an Assistant Editor.

Created in 2018 in conjunction with Stormzy and Penguin Random House, #Merky Books has quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic, exciting and important publishing imprints of recent years. We’re a lively and determined team with a wealth of experience, dedicated to representation, intersectionality, and empowering new voices. We are the home to pioneering fiction and non-fiction titles, and our current author roster comprises of, Chelsea Kwakye, Ore Ogunbiyi, Derek Owusu, Hafsa Zayyan, Anthony Anaxagorou and more.

We’re focused on upholding our ethos of uplifting a generation and are rapidly expanding our publishing programme to reflect this. There is a critical path to follow to ensure our brilliant books are made, and we need someone to work in a linear and entrepreneurial way to make it happen. We understand the barriers that hinder many to get into traditional publishing which is why we are accepting submissions from candidates from non-traditional publishing avenues.

Our desired new team member will:
– Provide vital support to our Commissioning Editor
– Have experience with working on Editorial projects with robust deadlines
– Be proficient in administrative tasks and have knowledge of specialist software programs
– Have experience taking a project through from ideation to completion
– Be familiar and passionate with the #Merky Books world and our vision for growth

As an Assistant Editor you will also be responsible for a range of tasks from scheduling meetings, reading new submissions, editorial adjustments (structural and line editing) and managing production timelines. In return, we’ll give you an insight into the breadth of our Editorial structure and beyond. We’ll support you with your career development, and provide you with support and training to get to grips with in-house systems, and the publishing industry. No two days will be the same and your new role will vary, so being adaptable and proactive will help you to excel within this position.
