Ronan Browne has been described by The Irish Times as “One of the finest pipers....an innovator who has developed his own unique style”. Originally from Dublin but living in Connemara, he is one of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians. Since taking up the pipes in 1972, Ronan spent his early years soaking up the music of the old masters of Irish music, Willie Clancy, Seamus Ennis, Tommy Reck, Johnny Doran, Tommie Potts and Denis Murphy.

Having spent his life as a professional musician, Ronan straddles that difficult divide between pure traditional music and the modern electronic world. Over a fascinating career his work has ranged from solo projects to decades playing with his trio CRAN, with Kevin Glackin & Seán Tyrrell, as well his celebrated 40-year duet with Peter O’Loughlin and his acclaimed collaboration with poet Louis de Paor. He was the original piper with both the Afro Celt Sound System and ‘Riverdance’ and now regularly performance in a trio with Connemara singer Róisín Elsafty and harpist Siobhán Armstrong.

Ronan writes and performs music for film & television has been involved in hundreds of album recordings since his first venture into the studio in 1982. He has collaborated with many of the top artists playing Irish Music, Classical, Pop, Jazz and Country. Most likely to be seen in his recording studio these days, Ronan both records, and designs album covers. Writing about the history of Irish pipes increasingly occupies him, and he is often consulted by musicians around the world for advice on pipes and tips on playing.

Featured in this afternoon concert at the recently-restored Doneraile Court will be airs & tunes played by Ronan on whistles and 18th century pipes. Highly entertaining introductions to each piece can be eagerly expected.
