Tunes in the Church, To Go!

As a new season of Tunes in the Church in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway gets under way, a new CD of music from the series has been released.

The brainchild of Cormac Begley, the series is going into its fourth year. Musicians lined up to play this summer include Saileog Ní Cheannabháin, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, Charlie Harris, Lillis Ó Laoire, Maitiú Ó Casaide, Helen Diamond, Andres Tradberg, Kelly Fitzhenry, Johnny O’Hallaron, Emma O’Sullivan, Ronan Flaherty, Josie MacDonnacha, Brendan Begley, Clíodhna Ní Bheaglaoich, Cormac Cannon, Breda Keville, Pádraic Keane, Jacqueline McCarthy, Bernadette McCarthy, Marion McCarthy, Tim McHugh, Shane Mulchrone, and Michéal Ó Cathain. And that’s just July.

Many of these musicians feature on the CD as well, recorded live at St Nicholas’ to reflect, as Begley puts it, ‘the quality that Tunes in the Church strives to express… [It] is an important component of the vision of making this original and unique concept an independent and self-sustainable venture.’

One slant of such a series is to do live what recorded music does, that is to challenge ‘the concept that the home of Irish music is a the pub setting,’ and to provide a more appropriate setting for the listener and performer to share the experience of the music.
