Traditional/Folk Music Recording News

New recordings are out from Christy Moore, Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich, John Doyle and Kavan Donohoe, and a new benefit CD features Kíla, Cormac Breathnach and Damien Dempsey.

Kavan Donohoe
Young Cavan musician Kavan Donohoe has released a new CD, Kavan from Cavan. The CD was recorded by Fintan McManus in Belturbet, and features McManus and Tim Edey on guitars, and Niall Preston on bodhrán. Opening with a cover version of a Coldplay song, ‘Clock’, as a reel, it centres on Donohoe’s harp playing but includes his piping and low whistle playing.

Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich
Named in honour of Mount Brandon on the Dingle peninsula, Fé Scáth / In the Shadow is the new CD from Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich. It is produced by, and features on guitar, Garry Ó Briain. With surprising few dance tunes, it instead focuses on songs (including Christy Moore’s ‘The Conneeleys’, written with Wally Page, and ‘Caoineadh Sheáin Laoí’) and airs (including ‘Port Na bPúcaí’ and ‘De Bharr Na gCnoc’, which is also sung).

Christy Moore
Christy Moore himself has a new CD out this week called Folk Tales, produced by Declan Sinnott. As would be expected of the man, narrative is its raison d’être: ‘My Little Honda 50’ is an ode to the impact of the Honda 50 on rural Ireland in the 1980s; ‘Easter Snow’ is a tribute to Seamus Ennis; ‘Farmer Michael Hayes’ is the tale of an evicted farmer. ‘On Morecambe Bay’ tells the story of the Chinese cockle pickers who drowned in Lancashire in 2004.
