The recipients of the RTÉ Lyric FM and Irish Music Rights Organisation ‘Mentored Composition Bursary’ for 2012 have been announced as Seán Clancy and Enda Bates.

Both Clancy and Bates studied in Dublin. Bates completed a PhD in composition in 2010 at Trinity College, Dublin, where he now teaches. Clancy studied at University College Dublin, and is currently working towards his own composition doctorate at Birmingham Conservatoire, a city in which he is also a resident composer with the renowned Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Clancy has worked closely with David Lang during his time with BCMG. Bates is a founding member of the Spatial Music Collective.

The Mentored Composition Bursaries give composers the opportunity to gain experience in working with and writing for full symphony orchestra, in this case the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. In composing their scores, Bates and Clancy will receive guidance from the RTÉ Lyric FM Composer in Residence, a position currently held by Cork-born and Dublin-based Linda Buckley. Each of the recipients’ works will eventually be workshopped and recorded by the full RTÉ NSO.
