Nest, a multimedia arts project culminating in a three day musical and theatrical presentation at T13 in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast on 20—22 July 2011, was launched last week by the Artistic Directors of the project, Brian Irvine and John McIlduff of the production company Dumbland.

Part of the London 2012 Festival, Nest is conceived as ‘an unusual census’, as a ‘unique study of life across Northern Ireland’ and as ‘a glorious and poignant celebration of the people of Northern Ireland’. Thousands of objects are being donated to the project, attached to each of which will be a note explaining the personal connection between the object and its donor. These objects will ultimately form part of an elaborate visual installation, which will in turn host a theatrical and musical performance inspired by the stories detailed on the label attached to each object. This performance will involve over five hundred singers and performers from across Northern Ireland, in collaboration with the Ulster Youth Orchestra.

All of the objects, people and stories involved in the Nest project, in addition, will be filmed and photographed for inclusion in the Nest archive.

Nest is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland through the Artists Taking the Lead programme.
