Jazz Concerts This Week

Holland is a renowned jazz bass player, having played in Miles Davis’ ‘third great quintet’ alongside Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and leading his own formidable band in recent years. He regularly delves into smaller acoustic side-projects like this one, teaming up with four flamenco musicians from Granada.

This week, two contrasting jazz concerts are taking place in Dublin: Dave Holland and Pepe Habichuela on Wednesday, 9 November, in the National Concert Hall, and the Robert Glasper Experiment on Saturday, 11 November, in the Workman’s Club.

Blue Note Pianist Robert Glasper (pictured) has toured and recorded with Erykah Badu, The Roots, Meshell Ndegeocello and Q-Tip, and is considered as much a part of hip-hop as jazz - at least in his native America. His piano trio, which he brings to Dublin plus saxophonist Casey Benjamin, tends to borrow classic jazz and broadway melodies and juxtapose them with the sound of modern hip-hop.

This Whirligig night will be topped off with music from the Dublin scene — hip-hop collective Mixtapes from the Underground — and an after show improv jam session.

Tickets are €10-16 and the concert starts at 8pm.
