Two upcoming jazz festivals, aimed specifically at European ensembles in the early stage of their career, have put out a call for applications.

The 12 Points! festival is following on the success of its 2011 edition in the Project Arts Centre, Dublin, with a temporary move to the venue Casa de Musica in Porto, Portugal, in February 2012.

Run by the Improvised Music Company in Ireland, the festival is heading into its sixth year, having maintained its ambitious programming despite funding cuts.

Entry to 12 Points! is free: the deadline for applications is 21 October 2011.

The Bucharest International Jazz Competition is, by comparison, slightly more traditional in its approach, but offers a number of small cash prizes as incentives.

It will take place on 12-19 May 2012. The rules stipulate an age limit for musicians of thirty-five years. The deadline for applications is 10 February 2012 and there is an application fee of €100.
