The Irish charity Suas Educational Development is selling a CD of African folk songs recorded by an award-winning primary school choir in Nairobi, Kenya as part of the school’s fund raising this Christmas.

In the Mukuru Kwa Reuben slum in Nairobi, Kenya, Gatoto Primary School choir are multiple award winners at the Kenyan National Schools Choir Competition and the Kenyan National Music Festival. This year they were the top placed choir in the country.

Led by the choir master Evans Hegan, they rehearse in a corrugated iron room without a piano or sheet music, and they busk regularly to raise money in order to compete in competitions.

Their CD, Kakali is a collection of African folk songs performed by the choir. All of the funds raised from the sale of this CD will go to supporting the running costs of Gatoto Primary School. The CD is part of the ‘Powerful Presents’ gift range available online at Suas.ie/shop.html and is priced €12.99 (plus €2.00 postage and packaging).

For the past fourteen years, the staff of Gatoto Primary School have been providing education to approximately one thousand children a year. The school also offers a food programme, provides HIV and AIDS education, and actively encourage students to get involved in community services, with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty and unemployment in the community.

Kakali is a joint project between Gatoto Primary School and volunteers who worked in the school as part of the Suas Volunteer Programme.
