Apply for Sliabh Luachra Traditional Musician in Residence

10-month residency to support performance and education and grow public awareness of the region's musical traditions.

Tomorrow (25 May 2018) is the deadline for traditional musicians with a strong understanding of the musical style and repertoire of the Sliabh Luachra area to apply for a significant new residency position.

The residency will be located in the Sliabh Luachra region which includes parts of counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

Applications are restricted to instrumentalists, although it is hoped in future years to extend residency opportunities to include singers and dancers.

Launching the initiative, Cork County Council Arts Officer Ian McDonagh said:

We are delighted to be able to provide this residency opportunity with our partner organisations. The residency will be an important resource supporting music development throughout the Sliabh Luachra area. We have an ambitious programme and the Musician in Residence will be central to the delivery of our objectives.

The residency is supported by the Arts Offices of Cork County Council, Kerry Council and Limerick City and County Council, and the Irish Traditional Music Archive in association with the Arts Council.

Unique style
The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail was established in 2014 with the aim of bringing together musicians, festivals and local music organisations to look at ways of preserving, celebrating and promoting the region’s unique musical styles, repertoire and heritage. Since its inception, new resources have been developed including a website at www.sliabhluachra.ie, an annual calendar of events, heritage information and an interactive map of the region.

The aims of this new 10-month residency include supporting performance, education and public awareness of the musical heritage of the area; working with locally based musicians and festivals; developing opportunities for young people; supporting local festivals and events; and identifying new opportunities to grow public engagement with the region’s music traditions.

Applications from musicians will be assessed on experience and record of achievement; understanding of the residency and capacity to deliver an effective programme; and willingness to work with local stakeholders, venues, festivals and musicians.

The residency will take place between September 2018 and September 2019 and a 25-hour working week will be agreed as part of the contract. The SMusician in Residence will be paid a fee of €15,000 inclusive of all travel and accommodation costs.

The deadline for applications is Friday 25 May at 5pm. For full details visit www.corkcoco.ie
