Finghin Collins to Open 10th New Ross Piano Festival with 3 Concertos

Festival will also premiere five new Irish works.

Finghin Collins will open the 10th New Ross Piano Festival next Friday 25 September with a concert in which he conducts three piano concertos and performs in one.

Performing with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Collins will play and conduct Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3, followed by French pianist Cédric Tiberghien performing Mendelssohn’s No. 1 and Kiev-born Alexei Grynyuk playing Scriabin’s Concerto in F sharp minor, both conducted by Collins. The concert will take place in St Mary’s and St Michael’s Church in New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Tiberghien and Grynyuk are among a range of international artists performing at the festival, which takes place from 24 to 27 SeptemberArtistic Director Collins has also invited Olga Scheps from Russia and Daria van den Bercken from Amsterdam who will both make their Irish debuts. Scheps’ programme will include a range of works by Chopin, while van den Bercken’s programme includes Handel’s Suite in D minor, HWV 428, and his Chaconne in G major, HWV 435.

Other highlights include a performance of Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht by the Fidelio Trio (Darragh Morgan, Adi Tal and Mary Dullea), a piano masterclass with Tiberghien, and a piano duet by Collins and Tiberghien (Brahms’ Hungarian Dances). The masterclass is free.

In addition, Scheps, van den Bercken, Grynyuk, Tiberghien and Collins will give the world premiere of five new works by Irish composers.

The works, titled Ros Tapestry Suite VI–X and composed by Eric Sweeney, Andrew Hamilton, Linda Buckley, Deirdre Gribbin and Sam Perkin, were commissioned by the festival and are inspired by the tapestry of the same name, which recounts the twelfth-century Norman invasion of Wexford in 15 panels. The first five panels were brought to musical life by composers Sebastian Adams, Elaine Agnew, Gerald Barry, John Kinsella and Gerry Murphy last year.

During the weekend, jazz piano sessions will also take place, given by pianists Jim Doherty and Colm O’Brien.

Tickets range from €5 to €25. For full details, see below or visit www.newrosspianofestival.com
