ECM Weekend in Cork

Pioneering record label to be celebrated in weekend of concerts and screenings.

Triskel Christchurch in Cork will host a weekend dedicated to the ECM label on 27–29 November.

Founded in 1969 by Manfred Eicher, ECM has released some of the best known jazz, world and contemporary music records of our time, including Keith Jarrett’s Live in Cologne, Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians and several releases by Arvo Pärt, plus records by artists such as Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Kenny Wheeler, Pat Metheny, John Adams, Gavin Bryars, John Abercrombie, Barry Guy and Evan Parker.

The ECM weekend will consist of four performances by artists with recent releases on the label – June Tabor, Arve Henriksen, John Potter, Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen – as well as a range of other events.

Tony Sheehan, Artistic Director of Triskel Arts Centre, commented:

To work with ECM artists in this way has been a long-held ambition in Triskel. The weekend will bring some of the most beautiful music in an eclectic selection of live concerts staged in the acoustic and visually beautiful surroundings of Christchurch. The weekend itself will be a chance for fans and those new to the music to immerse themselves in an experience that will also include talks, vinyl record ‘listening sessions’ and related fringe events and concerts, and screenings of ECM movies in a full digital cinema format.

The weekend opens on 27 November with the Irish premiere of John Potter’s Amores Pasados – two voices (Potter and Trio Medieval’s Anna Maria Friman) and two lutes (Jacob Heringman and Ariel Abramovich) performing lute songs by rock musicians alongside 17th century originals and transcriptions of songs by English composers of the early 20th century. The works include settings by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks and Sting.

Saturday night’s double bill will be a night of improvisation, beginning with a solo concert by Norwegian Trumpeter Arve Henriksen, followed by the duo Food (saxophonist Iain Ballamy and drummer Thomas Strønen). The final concert on Sunday at 8pm features the Quercus trio, with BBC Folk Singer of the Year June Tabor, Iain Ballamy and pianist Huw Warren.

Films to be screened are Sounds and Silence, a musical road movie with Manfred Eicher, and Arrows into Infinity which focuses on jazz legend Charles Lloyd. Irish Times journalist Jim Caroll will host a conversation with artists and labels on the Sunday afternoon and throughout the weekend there will be ECM vinyl listening sessions at Triskel.
