Carducci Quartet to Perform All 15 Shostakovich Quartets in Cork

Four-day festival dedicated to the Russian composer's work also features Barry Douglas and the Vanbrugh Quartet.

The Carducci Quartet will perform all 15 Shostakovich string quartets this November in Cork in a four-day festival dedicated to the composer’s work.

Presented by the Cork Orchestral Society and CIT Cork School of Music on the 40th anniversarty of the Russian composer’s death, the festival on 5–8 November will include a range of other work, including pianist Barry Douglas and the Vanbrugh Quartet performing Shostakovich’s piano quintet. The Vanbrugh will also combine with the Carducci to perform the String Octet.

The Carducci Quartet have been performing the 15 quartets throughout 2015 as part of a special year-long project, and will travel to the US after Cork to perform them at the Phillips in Washington. The Guardian, writing about their performance at The Globe in London, said:

The Carduccis maintained astonishing intensity, right through to the focused stillness of No. 15. This was, as advertised, perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime event…

Under the artistic directorship of David Kenny and Criostóir Ó Loingsigh, Shostakovich Festival 2015, which takes place at Cork School of Music on Union Quay, will also feature Hugh Murray (violin), Maria O’Connor (cello), Ed Creedon (viola), and pianists Denise Crowley, Carol Arnopp, Cillian Williamson, Ellen Jansson, Cian O’Leary, Jordan Bagot, Conor Palliser, and Criostóir Ó Loingsigh.
