In its latest round of funding under the Festival and Events Scheme, the Arts Council has restored funding to five of the seven traditional music festivals that were cut completely last year.

An Chúirt Chruitireactha, Cruinniú na bhFliúit, Éigse an Spidéil, NYAH County Cavan Irish Traditional Music Festival, and Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh all received funding again, with amounts ranging from €2,500 to €9,000. 

Tionól Niocláis Tóibín did not apply for funding this year, while the Skerries Traditional Music Weekend did apply but was refused.

The total amount received by traditional music and dance festivals (categorised under ‘Traditional Arts’) was €66,000. As well as the five above, recipients included Féile Patrick Byrne, Corofin Traditional Festival, the Jim Dowling Uilleann Pipe and Trad Festival, and the John McKenna Festival. 

The average amount received by 16 traditional arts festivals was €4,125.

Music and Opera
As well as the traditional music and dance festivals, €149,000 was allocated in the latest round to festivals categorised under ‘Music’. Recipients included the Bray Jazz Festival (€20,000), Limerick Jazz Festival (€15,000) and New Ross Piano Festival (€15,000).

The average amount received by 15 music festivals was €9,267.

Lismore Music Festival received €10,000 under the ‘Opera’ category and the 10th Annual Coole Music Orchestra Festival received €4,481 in the ‘Young People’ category.
