Head of Vocal and Operatic Studies

Friday, 9 December 2016, 5.00pm

Birmingham Conservatoire seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to lead the department of Vocal and Operatic Studies.  This is a pivotal moment in the history of the Conservatoire as it prepares to move to its new, £56 million, state-of-the-art accommodation in September 2017.  The new Conservatoire building will house five performance venues and a dedicated suite of rooms for the Vocal and Operatic Department’s day to day activities. Links with other venues in the city are strong and include Symphony Hall and Town Hall, the Crescent Theatre, and St Philips and St Chad’s Cathedrals; it is envisaged that these venues will remain important to the Vocal Department after the move. Applicant numbers are strong and this results in a department of c.80 singers. There is a healthy balance of Home/EU and International students.

The successful applicant will have a national or international reputation as a singer and/or teacher of singing and be able to articulate a strong vision for the future of the department. They will possess a deep and passionate commitment to the education of young artists and have a detailed, up-to-date understanding of the demands of today’s employment landscape. It is likely that they will have an extensive network of industry contacts with whom the department can engage. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the needs and aspirations of undergraduate and postgraduate students and be able demonstrate how these can be accommodated.  They will need to possess the necessary creative flair to manage programmes of study and also to collaborate with industry professionals (both internal and external) in the provision of exciting, high quality performance projects. Some experience of managing a team would be an advantage.

The Conservatoire is seeking a talented, ambitious individual who is committed to providing outstanding support and guidance to aspiring young singers. The successful candidate will join an ambitious but friendly team and can be assured of the support of colleagues in realising their ambitions for the department.
