Haydn Symphony 83 in G minor, Hob. I:83 La Poule
Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet is one of the most powerful and personal compositions of the twentieth-century, dedicated to the victims of war and inspired by the destruction of Dresden. It conveys a sense of a world falling apart in a hallucinatory slow motion. Barshai’s transcription was authorised by the composer himself, and magnifies the inherent tragedy and drama of the music. Christmas concertos were popular in Italy, and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto is easily his best-known work. Telemann’s concerto in four uniquely contrasting movements is more like a series of small tone poems than a typical Baroque concerto, which holds its audience by variations more or less within the same psychic space. Of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies, No. 83 La Poule is a seminal work marking a new level of compositional skills, launching the important cycle of mature symphonies and the aesthetic basis for their extraordinary appeal. It is light and sensitive in spirit and displays, to great effect, Haydn‘s humour & ingenuity, and the variety of his fertile imagination.
