Lá na Cruite / National Harp Day 2018

Saturday October 20th marks Ireland’s second National Harp Day/Lá na Cruite where Harp Ireland, Cruit Éireann, once again, invites harpers and people interested in the harp to join them to celebrate all facets of the harp in Ireland.Venues from Donegal to Dingle, from Belfast to Bandon will resound to the wonderful sound of harp-playing at concerts, sessions, Harpathons, pop-up sessions, talks and demonstrations of harp making. 

National Harp Day is Cruit Éireann’s second major initiative to promote Ireland’s national instrument, encourage more people to learn the harp, attract new audiences and recognise the harp’s unique place in Irish musical and cultural life.Harp events will take place at a number of key venues in cities and towns nationwide including Armagh, Belfast, Dublin, Mayo, Galway, Limerick, Laois, Louth, Meath, Cork, Wexford. 2018 sees Harp Ireland, Cruit Éireann venturing even farther afield, with associated harp events taking place virtually with harping friends in the Isle of Man, the USA and New Zealand. See a list of events around the country below: 

  • Young harpers will gather at The Lexicon Cultural Centre in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin to take part in a fun-filled Harpathon. It will be followed by an exciting collaboration with Lorcán Mac Mathúna, dlr musician in residence, Dinnseanchas, where selected extracts from the Irish Folklore collection about local place-names will merge with traditional storytelling, harpers’ music and songs, performed by young people from the area. Harper Rachel Duffy will be joined by harpers from Bray and Monkstown to participate in the project.
  • Galway City Museum will show case four events during the day; Meet the harp makers at 10am, a lecture with early harper Paul Dooley at 10.30am, and a student performance at 12pm. The final event features Kathleen Loughnane, Florianne Blancke, Úna Ní Fhlannagáin Maire uí Chrónín, and Áine Sheridan in concert in the spellbinding medieval St Nicholas’s Church from 3 – 5pm.
  • The Irish Traditional Music Archive in Merrion Square in collaboration with The Historical Harp Society of Ireland will reverberate to the sounds of the early harp from 1pm with a concert featuring Siobhán Armstrong and seannós singer Eibhlís Ní Riordáin followed at 2pm by  a fascinating lecture on the history of the old Irish harp  from world expert Simon Chadwick. Beginners can sign up to discover the world of the early Irish harp with teacher, Sylvia Crawford. The day will conclude with a concert at 5pm from early harper Siobhán Armstrong, who will be joined by harpers Cormac de Barra and Alannah Thornburg, giving the harp a more contemporary flavour.
  • The Royal Hibernian Academy hosts an enchanting mixture of harp and flute with Teresa O Donnell and Karen Leitner at 2pm. They will be followed by multi-talented harper-composer Anne-Marie O’Farrell, who brings her unique insights to harping.
  • Harpers in Wexford will appear at the Wexford Arts Centre and in pop-up concerts in Gorey throughout the day. 
  • Harpers from The Meath Harp Academy play at Nobber Library, Post Office, Nana’s Café and later at the George Eogan Centre. 
  • Music Generation Louth with Deirdre Ni Bhuachalla and Comhastas Dun Dealgan perform in Louth County Library followed by a shor ‘try the harp’ session.
  • Ashbourne Library hosts Fiona Gryson and her harp students 1pm-2pm.
  • In Port Laoise, harpers from Music Generation Laois will be joined by renowned harper Triona Marshall to perform a new commission composed by their director, harper Siobhán Buckley.
  • Mayo harpers, led by harpers Laoise Kelly and Gráinne Hambly, will turn out in force in the Town Hall Theatre Westport at 3pm; they will be joined by Mayo Music Generation Harp Ensemble while Caoimhe Kilkenny leads a ‘hands on harp’ session at 1.30pm.
  • Harpers led by Anita O Brien will stage two performances; beginning with Mullingar Library 12.45 pm and finishing with a performance at All Saints Music Festival in All Saints Church Mullingar.
  • Students at the Royal Irish Academy of Music will stage a pop-up concert there at 1pm while the stunning setting of the Pearse Museum, St Enda’s Park in Rathfarnham will welcome a Rising Stars concert at 3pm hosted by Cairde na Cruite, with harpers from Louth and other counties. 
  • Muckross House in Killarney has a busy afternoon; beginning at 1pm with a solo performance from Kerry Harper, Deirdre Granville, followed by workshops on the Muckross Harp trail, and ending with an ensemble concert at 3pm.
  • Lá na Cruite begins at 2pm in Reidun’s Harp Centre in Killarney with a harp session, followed at 3pm by a workshop on Improvisation and harp accompaniment, and finishing up with a concert at 4pm by Reidun Schlesinger and her students. 
  • Cork harpers led by Damhnait Sweeney, Oisín Morrison and Orla Busteed will be turning out in force at 2pm at the Crawford Gallery .
  • The McGowan Harp Ensemble appears in Ballee High School, Antrim at 2pm. 
  • Carroll School of Harp, Sonas Harp Ensemble will perform  in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry 11.30am
  • Harpers perform in the Outdoor Museum exhibits at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Cultra  2pm – 4pm.
  • Harp Fusion appears at Brownlow House, Lurgan during afternoon tea, 2pm-5pm. 
  • Spanish harper, Javier Sáinz and Mícheál Ó Catháin join forces to perform early Irish harp music at 8pm in the McAuley Place Arts and Culture Centre in Naas, Co Kildare.
  • Manx harpers will join in our celebration with a gala concert featuring Mera Royle, BBC’s Folk Musician of the Year, who will play an evening concert in the Villa Arcade in the Isle of Man.
  • Joining the celebrations a bit further afield will be Janet Harbison, performing in London, and Richard Allen in Italy 
  • Kathy di Angelo and harper friends will chime in from the US to celebrate Lá na Cruite stateside.
  • The University of Limerick’s Contemplative Centre at the Irish World Academy showcases harpers from Fiana Ní Chonaill’s Cuisle Harp Ensemble at 1pm.
  • Renowned Sligo harper-composer, Michael Rooney, performs with young Sligo harpers in the Hawkswell Theatre 2pm.
